XBXRX: an animalistic seizure of grunts and yips. No redeeming value, but it’s interesting to note that even after enduring their assaultive, dry-humping-of-the-ear “songs”, everyone applauded politely. I did as well, but I kind of really meant “fuck you”. Nice ties. Lucky for them I had already paid. I felt sorry for the mothers of the guys in XBXRX. It must be hard to watch your children grow up and then follow their dreams and go off into the world to perform music, when it so totally blows."

And then it was time for a hitmaker in the making—Tyrone Wells, solo artist extraordinaire. Wells must be good at poker: as his band set up on stage, he waited in the wings, let out a yawn, and then adjusted his lean on a side pillar. He swaggered from the shadow of the wings into the spotlight and catapulted into a strong and versatile set that mixed soul, hip-hop, blues, and pop-country love ballads.

So between the odd observational urban country sloper (noteably 'Arcade Precinct', about "teenage types in shopping centres going shoplifting and having a laugh. It's very frivolous. It makes them sound like Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid") the 1990s album staggers drunk around NYC's East Village or London's East-End in its coolest leather jacket with its arms around its mates, howling at the moon on tracks like "You're Supposed To Be My Friend" (about being let down by your mates), "You Made Me Like It" (about being turned on to records by your mates) and "Jingle Bells" (about, um, not being told you're going out with a witch by your mates).
